We have prepared this list for you so that you can be prepared for your volunteer workday on an energy-efficiency project. It covers what to expect, what to bring and wear, age requirements, and how to be respectful of others.
What to Expect
- The day before you will receive a group text from the Operations Coordinator introducing you to the team and sending you the time to arrive and location of the project site. Feel free to schedule carpooling if you feel comfortable doing so. Parking can be limited.
- During the first half hour the Team Lead will communicate with the Client in order to collect paperwork and assess what upgrades need to happen.
- While on the project site, the Team Lead is responsible for communicating volunteer tasks and safety precautions. Volunteers must check-in with the Team Leader after completion of each task to make sure they completed the task correctly and get started on a new one. Please feel free to ask questions if you are unfamiliar with any process/tool.
- All tools will be provided and no prior experience is necessary. However, only authorized volunteers can use circular saws and nail guns.
- Workdays usually last from 3-5 hours depending on the scope of work, number of volunteers, etc. If you have limited time you can leave early or arrive late. Just be sure to communicate with the Team Lead.
- At the end of the workday, please help do a walk-through to ensure no equipment or tools are left behind, all work areas are cleaned up and everything that was misplaced is put back to its original location.
What to Bring & Wear
- During COVID, all Clients and Volunteers MUST wear an N95 mask fully covering your nose and mouth. We can provide an N95 if you do not have one. Also keep socially distanced and wash/sanitize your hands before and after your workday.
- Bring Snacks/Lunch/Water if needed, but do not eat inside. If food/drink is offered to you, you may take it home or eat/drink outside.
- Bring your own favorite tools if you prefer, but know that we do provide all necessary tools. If you bring your own tools, clearly mark them for retrieval at the end of the day.
- Wear comfortable and appropriate clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty or stained and is not offensive or objectionable. Also layer up as you could be in and out of the house a lot.
- Closed toe shoes are required.
Age Requirements
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old of age to participate in any volunteer activities. Volunteers who are below 18 years of age, require a parent/guardian to co-sign the Liability Waiver and are not allowed to operate any high-power tools (i.e. circular saw, nail gun) or participate in any other hazardous activity.
Be Respectful of Others
- Treat all individuals with a sense of dignity, respect, and worth. Make a personal commitment to be nonjudgmental about living conditions, socioeconomic and cultural differences and the lifestyle of each person with whom you work. Be courteous and polite in all your actions.
- Abstain from the use of photo, audio or video recording equipment unless given consent.
- Respect all confidential information of staff, volunteer, client or other person.
- Be dependable, recognizing the commitment and responsibility of your volunteer assignment.
- Be a team player and help others when needed.
- Accept assignments consistent with your interest, abilities, and available time.
- Accept assignments with an open mind and a willingness to learn.
- Avoid conflict of interest situations and refrain from actions that may be perceived as such.
- Do not use, possess, or be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs at any time, and abstain from any illegal activity.
