Green building is a field that is continuously expanding, which is why green building groups are so important. These organizations and nonprofits help promote sustainability both locally, and nationally by providing information, tools, and resources to our communities.

AIRE – Appalachian Regional Initiative for Sustainable Energy is a Boone-based nonprofit founded in 1998 and has an objective to see 500 new solar systems installed in Watauga County by 2010.
ASU Sustainable Energy Society – Appalachian State University’s clean energy organization powered by students and staff, is dedicated to education of renewable energy sources.
Interstate Renewable Energy Council – Since 1982, IREC’s mission is to accelerate the sustainable utilization of renewable energy sources and technologies in and through state and local government and community activities.
Mountain Housing Opportunities – Affordable housing non-profit that does some green building through improving homes, neighborhoods, and communities for people in the Asheville area.
NC Green Power – Local non-profit program that is an easy & effective way to buy or supply renewable energy.
NC Sustainable Energy Association – Founded in 1978, a non-profit working to create a sustainable energy future for NC.
US Green Building Council – A national non-profit community of leaders working to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built, and operated.
